How To Choose The Right Running Shoe For You

A running shoe is the most important thing a runner should have. So, are you ready to run and still have no idea what running shoe to buy?
Here's a simple checklist that you can use to help you choose what running shoe best fits you.

Determine where you are going to use your shoes. Is it for road or trail running? faster shoes for speed drills? shoes for training on track? or just want to buy your first ever running shoes to start your marathon journey?

Determine what type of surface you'll be running on:

ROAD

  • Light and flexible shoe that is made to cushion your feet while running on hard and even surfaces or pavements.
  • Can also be used for treadmill running or track.

TRAIL

  • Shoes intended for trail and dirt paths, giving you the extra support needed to endure mud, rocks, roots, wet and slippery surfaces.

Determine what type of running you're going to use it for:

CASUAL

  • usually short runs not more than 5 or 10k

  • Starting to actually run and soon be able to join a marathon or race.

RACING

  • Lightweight and usually flat running shoes designed for track and field, cross country, or even road running.

LONG-DISTANCE

  • Aiming to run a half, full, or even an ultra marathon.

  • Would require more stability and cushioning to avoid injury from long hours of running.

What kind of support does your feet need:

OVER-PRONATION

  • Your ankles and arches tend to roll too inward and downward with each step.

SUPINATION

  • Foot rolls onto the outer edge of the feet. Also known as "under pronation".

NEUTRAL PRONATION

  • When the foot and ankle are in an upright alignment during stride.

Running Shoe types:

NEUTRAL

  • Minimum support; Allows the foot to flex and move in any way.

STABILITY

  • Suggested for runners with overpronate.

MOTION CONTROL

  • Suggested for runners with moderate or severe overpronation.

Other things to consider when buying:

YOUR ARCH HEIGHT

  • High, low, or medium arch.

YOUR WEIGHT

  • The heavier you are, the more you need cushioning to protect your joints.

SHOE STACK HEIGHT

  • The height between the heel of the shoe to the ground.

SHOE WIDTH AND LENGTH
  • Enough of toe space and right shoe size to avoid blisters.
